In the Social Survey conducted by the University of Hertfordshire units nationwide were canvassed for a snapshot of cadet life.

The survey will help plot the future course for the Corps and Dr Barbara Scott from the University's Social Science Dept who led the research team said: "It was encouraging to get such a positive response from keen young people.  Sea cadets certainly know where they are going."

Summer Review

Wizard time for juniors when the Corp’s new Commodore dropped in at their annual summer camp in Cornwall – and donned his Merlin outfit.

Commodore Laurie Brokenshire, a member of the elite Magic Circle, entertained the 10-12 year olds and earned a reputation for performing “miracles” with his repertoire of masterly magic.

His theme was more nautical when he visited the Corps’ summer camp aboard HMS Bristol at Portsmouth and watched the cadets demonstrate their skills on the water.

Then it was the turn of “the green machine” to show their paces, the Marine Cadet Detachments treating their new “boss” to a full scale battle-ground

display of commando tactics at their annual camp in leafy Hampshire.

Commented Cdre Brokenshire: “The summer camps were an ideal opportunity for me to see cadets doing what they do best – having fun.”

Cadets make “super sailors”

So said First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Alan West in a tribute to the Corps, revealing that over 35% of his senior ratings are ex-cadets.  Extolling the value of cadets who opt for a career in the Senior Service Sir Alan also highlighted the contribution cadet units make to the community.  “The value of such a well motivated and led youth organisation in communities up and down the country needs o be more widely recognised,” he told a meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Sea Cadet Group, “There is a major role for Local Authorities to support the work of Sea Cadet Units.”
